A star sprinter on four MIAC track & field championship teams as Macalester was beginning a string of 11 straight league titles in the late 50’s and early 60’s, LeRoy Martin served as team captain for the conference-winning squads in 1960 and 1961.
Martin, who recently became a regional director on the M Club board, wasted little time as establishing himself as a a premiere sprinter, winning the conference championship as a freshman in both the 200-yard dash and 440-yard dash, while also running on the first-place mile relay team. He was on three MIAC-winning mile relay foursomes and as a junior claimed the conference crown in the 100 dash and 220 dash. Martin was also champion as a junior at the Carleton Relays in ’60 and ’61.
A generoius donor of his time for community building, Martin served as board president of the St. Paul Urban League (1976-78). He has been active in Port Angeles, Washington, United Way and American Cancer Society projects.
