A member of a long line of accomplished Macalester distance runners over the last quarter-century, Jennifer Tonkin was one of the top cross country and track runners in the MIAC in the early 90’s and got better every year while at Mac after arriving in St. Paul from Bellevue, Washington.
Her improvement continued at a fast pace after graduating and four years ago placed 10th at the U.S. Olympic marathon trials. Tonkin placed second in the Twin Cities marathon in ’99 after finishing sixth the year before.
In cross country at Macalester, she earned all-conference status all four years while qualifying for nationals as a senior.
In track and field, Tonkin won conference individual championships in both the 5000-meters and 10,000-meters and competed at the national meet as a junior.
She earned her MS and PhD in Chemistry from the University of Washington and is a faculty member at Seattle Central College.
