Daniel Welch started in goal for the men’s soccer team for three seasons, helping the Scots reach the NCAA Tournament in 1996 and 1997. As a senior in 1997, he allowed only three goals in 18 games, as Macalester won the MIAC and finished the season without a loss (14-0-4). Welch’s goals against average that year was a miniscule 0.15, which was the NCAA record for 10 years. He also still holds the school record for single-season shutouts with 13. Welch was a first team All-American and an Academic All-American following his senior year. After graduation, he played for the Minnesota Thunder semi-professional team, and still plays in adult leagues as a field player. Welch, who majored in anthropology, is now the Head of the Middle School at Boulder Country Day School in Boulder, Colo.
