Macalester’s top players competed last weekend (Sept. 25-26) at the Wilson / ITA Midwest Regionals hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College. This competition featured the top teams and players in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. Macalester senior women’s tennis player Angie Horner has received ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Five honors. Horner receives second-team at-large honors. Horner is the most accomplished player in the history of the Macalester women’s tennis program. She graduated last week with a double-major in English and Russian Studies, and a 3.89 cumulative grade point average. For the second year in a row, Macalester’s Angie Horner, Stephanie Lee and Amanda Wenzel have earned All-MIAC honors. These three combined to go 43-11 at the top of the singles lineup, including 22-8 in league play. The doubles team of Lee and Horner also gets an all-conference certificate for the second year in a row. Macalester suffered its first shutout defeat since early in the ’08 season, falling to Carleton 9-0 Tuesday in Northfield to wind things up at 11-7 overall and 5-5 in the MIAC. This defeat, coupled with Concordia’s 5-4 win at the same time against St. Catherine, keeps the Scots out of the MIAC post-season tourney this weekend. Macalester and St. Olaf played half their big MIAC match Monday (April 20), with the Scots taking two of the three doubles matches before rain forced the match to be halted until Friday at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. St. Olaf, however, rallied for four singles victories to earn a narrow 5-4 victory. Six of Macalester’s nine conference battles have been decided by 5-4 final scores in what has been one of Mac’s most exciting seasons ever. One day after Gustavus snapped Macalester’s 10-match winning streak, the Scots returned to their winning ways by beating St. Catherine 6-3 in a contest which was moved indoors to Lakeville’s Lifetime Fitness Club due to rain Sunday afternoon in St. Paul. Conference-leading Gustavus Adolphus, going for its 16th consecutive MIAC crown, put an end to Macalester’s 10-match winning streak by stopping the Scots 7-2 at the Macalester Tennis Courts. Macalester toppled Bethel 7-2 in Arden Hills to extend its winning streak to 10 matches. This is the first double-digit streak for the Scots since the team won 11 in a row in 1999. Macalester won its third straight 5-4 thriller in MIAC competition when it edged out the Pipers Tuesday at Hamline as the Scots extend their winning streak to nine matches. The Scots have relied heavily on the top half of its lineup the past two years but against Hamline it came down to contentious matches at fifth and sixth singles which went Macalester’s way.
