Following a standout career at the University of Minnesota, Briana Hassett has joined the Macalester softball staff as the team’s new pitching coach. Hassett led all NCAA Division I pitchers in strikeouts last spring as a senior, fanning 414 batters in 307 innings in the circle, while posting a 1.87 ERA and holding opposing hitters to a .182 batting average. Macalester’s softball team has been preparing for next season with several fall practices and the fall campaign winds down with the annual alumni game at Macalester softball field on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. Former Mac players are invited to play in the game or just stop by and enjoy the festivities surrounding the game. The team will have a barbecue after the game for players, alumni, families, friends and recruits. Macalester’s Amanda Cagan has been selected as a Jewish Sports All-American by the Jewish Sports Review. Cagan earns Division II / III first-team softball honors after a very productive junior campaign for the Scots. Macalester held its annual post-season banquet recently and announced the winners of the major team awards. Ali Nystrom was selected by her teammates as Macalester’s Most Valuable Player. A second baseman and outfielder, Nystrom batted in the leadoff spot for the Scots and led the team with 27 runs scored. Olivia Abbott has been selected by league coaches to the All-MIAC team. Abbott, who excelled at both pitcher and second base while batting No. 2 in the batting lineup, gained Macalester’s three MIAC pitching wins. She pitched 66 innings, striking out 45 batters against 22 walks and went 3-9. Macalester beat Martin Luther College 8-0 and 11-3 at home to wind up the 2009 season on a winning note. Olivia Abbott tossed her fifth career shutout in game one and Crystal Barriga belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game. Hamline turned a 6-6 tie to win the second game 8-6 and earn a doubleheader sweep over host Macalester to clinch the No. 3 seed in next week’s four-team MIAC tournament.
