On President Barack Obama’s 100th day in office, Ben Finkenbinder ’07 took off on Air Force One at 7 a.m. with the nation’s 44th president for a town hall meeting later that morning in Missouri. Finkenbinder, one of Obama’s assistant traveling press secretaries, returned to Washington that afternoon to get ready for a primetime press conference about Obama’s first months in office. Work wasn’t over until 11 p.m. It was just another day at the office for Finkenbinder, 24, who was called by Vanity Fair (February 2009) one of Obama’s “whiz kids” and featured in a photo by Annie Leibowitz. The three-day Twin Cities Classic was reduced to just a single round on Sunday as cold temperatures and rain cancelled Saturday’s round and snow forced the cancellation of Monday’s round. Macalester placed 15th out of 23 teams as the fall campaign comes to a close. The Scots finished with a 310 team score Sunday and were led by Nick Santrach. Nick Santrach and Ryan Peters led Macalester to a seventh place finish at the 2009 MIAC championships at Bunker Hills Golf course in Coon Rapids. The Scots move up a spot from a year ago and improve their team score by 11 strokes despite difficult playing conditions. Santrach finished in 19th place with a 56-hole total of 230. He fired rounds of 74, 75 and 80, and was in sixth place overall with six holes to play before a frustrating final six holes. In their final prep for next weekend’s MIAC championships, the Scots placed five out of seven teams over the weekend at the St. Olaf Invitational at the Summit Golf Club in Cannon Falls. Macalester posted a two-round 650 team score on back-to-back rounds of 325. Macalester stood in eighth place out of 20 teams after Saturday’s opening round with a 317 team score, but fell to 14th after the second day of play at the St. John’s Fall Invitational. The Scots shot a 328 Sunday to finish with a 645 team score. Ryan Peters and Nick Santrach turned in rounds of 74 to earn top individual honors and lead Macalester to an impressive 307-323 victory over MIAC rival St. Mary’s at Mississippi National Golf Course in Red Wing.
