MIAC men's championship preview & team outlooks
The Macalester men placed sixth and the women eighth Thursday-Saturday (Feb. 17-19) at the Minnestoa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.
Nathan Young won the MIAC title in the 100-yard backstroke and
Renee Jordan placed second in 1-meter diving and fourth on the 3-meter board to lead the way for the Scots.
Macalester highlights from Saturday:
After taking fourth on the 3-meter board the night before,
Renee Jordan (Fy., Anchorage, Ak. / Steller Secondary School) gained the first of what should be many all-conference certificates when she placed second in 1-meter diving. Her runner-up score was 396.95, which is an NCAA 'B' cut qualifying mark. Jordan finished second to MIAC Diver of the Year Sarah Moody from St. Catherine.
Also scoring consolation round points for the Mac women Saturday were:
Becca Galey in the 1650-yard freestyle (15th / 18:45.67),
Claire Eder (Sr., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) in the 200 backstroke (14th / 18:45.67).
Macalester highlights from Friday:
Nathan Young (Sr., Denver, Colo. / Littleton) won the MIAC championship in the 100-yard backstroke by placing first in the finals with a 51.21 clocking, edging Carleton's Andrew Mering (51.23) at the wall. Young was MIAC 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke champ as a frosh and has had a stellar career since.
Young's championship in the 100 back came just minutes after he finished 11th in the 100-yard breastroke (1:01.17). His mark is an NCAA 'B' qualifying time. Also on Friday,
Jeff Yamashita (Sr., Honolulu, Hi. / Iolani School) won the consolation finals to place ninth overall in the 100 butterfly (53.05).
Leading the way for the Mac women Friday was diver
Renee Jordan (Fy., Anchorage, Ak. / Steller Secondary School), who placed fourth on the 3-meter board (391.95). Swimming to 11th-place finishers were
Grace Fleming (Jr., Northampton, Mass.) in the 200 freestyle (1:58.51) and
Karoline Hart (Jr., Rexford, N.Y. / Niskayuna) in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.30).
Macalester highlights from Thursday:
Renee Jordan (Fy., Anchorage, Ak. / Steller Secondary School) posted the second-highest score in the prelimary round of 1-meter diving with a 229.80 mark. She'll go for high finish in the finals on Saturday.
In the men's 50-yard freestyle
Nathan Young (Sr., Denver, Colo. / Littleton) placed 11th (21.91).
