Under third-year head coach
Tony Jennison, Macalester finished the 2010 season with a 6-3 record, the best mark since 1986, setting school records for total points and total yards gained.
This past Sunday (Nov. 7), Macalester held its annual post-season awards banquet to celebrate one of the best seasons in Macalester football history, honor the commitment of the 14 senior football athletes, and to announce its 2010 team awards.
Offensive left tackle
Pete Goldberg (Sr., Bemidji, Minn. / Bemidji) was named Macalester 's Most Valuable Player. A four-year starter, Goldberg anchored a productive and veteran offensive line which gave the team a successful balanced attack. The Scots are one of a few Division III teams to average over 200 yards both rushing and passing, and the line surrendered just five QB sacks all season.
Goldberg started all 38 Macalester games at left tackle over the past four years and allowed only one sack in his junior and senior seasons combined. He was Mac's Co-Offensive MVP a year ago and this year graded out at 94% while registering 29 pancake blocks and 26 cut blocks. He led the blocking for a team which is currently ranked ninth in the nation in sacks allowed, 29th nationally in rushing yards per game, 25th in passing efficiency and 37th in total offense.
Wide receiver
Jon Elliott (Sr., El Paso, Tex. / Andress) was selected Offensive MVP, and linebacker
Brandon Murphy (So., Sunberg, Minn. / New London-Spicer) was chosen as Defensive MVP. Elliott lead the team with 51 receptions for 711 yards and nine touchdowns. He averaged 13.9 yards per catch and also returned 17 kickoffs for a 20.9 average. Eliiott was co-offensive MVP as a junior and this year broke a single season record with nine touchdowns receiving. Murphy, in his first year in the starting lineup, led the Scots with five quarterback sacks and finished fourth on the team with 43 tackles.
The Special Teams MVP is place-kicker
Auburn Jimenez (Fy., East Los Angeles, Calif. / St. John Bosco). Jimenez set school records with nine field goals and 64 kicking points. He was 4-for-5 on from 40 yards and beyond.
Macalester's Hustle Award was presented to offensive guard
Collin Murphy (Sr., Sunburg, Minn. / New London-Spicer).
The Frank Szewczyk Award, given to a person who shows extraordinary support and commitment to the Mac football program, went to
Alan Goldberg (Pete's father) and
