Macalester head women's soccer coach Kate Ryan Reiling '00, who helped guide the Scots to the 1998 NCAA Division III championship and 1999 national runner-up finish, has received a very prestigious honor, being selected to the NCAA Division III Silver Anniversary team. She is one of just 11 former players to receive this honor.
NCAA News Story
During the 2010-11 year, the NCAA is celebrating 25 years of DIII women's soccer. A subcommittee comprised of current and former soccer coaches helped name the NCAA Division III Woman's Soccer 25th Anniversary Team consisting of 11 student-athletes and one coach.
A three-time All-America midfielder, Ryan Reiling led Macalester to the NCAA Division III championship as a junior, and in her senior campaign was selected MIAC Player of the Year as the Scots finished runner-up in the NCAA playoffs. She was a two-time team captain and was selected as the Final Four Offensive Player of the Tournament in '98. She is ranked No. 7 on the program's all-time goal scoring list with 30 and during her four seasons as a Scot helped the team go 76-9-3 overall and winning three conference championships with perfect 10-0 records.
Former Macalester head coach John Leaney, who was Kate's coach at Mac, has high praise for his former start and coaching predecessor. “Kate is very deserving of this award. Twenty-five years of Final Fours means she was selected as one of the outstanding 11 players from over 100 teams that have played for the NCAA Division III women's championship.
“Kate, as a captain on 1998 and 1999 Final Four Macalester teams, showed exceptional drive and leadership culminating in a National Championship in '98 and a runner-up finish in '99.”
Ryan Reiling graduated Cum Laude from Macalester in 2000 with a degree in Political Science. She recently completed her Masters of Business Administration degree from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., and has served as a consultant with Google, Wal-Mart, and Marathon Equipment Company on both domestic and international expansion opportunities. She is also founder and creator of Morphology Games, a creative, laugh-out loud party board game for all ages.
The NCAA will acknowledge the team in word at the national championships in San Antonio, Texas on December 2 during the banquet at the Grand Hyatt Regency.
