Olympian Jim Spivey visits with men’s cross country squad

Macalester's men's cross country team was visited before Tuesday's training session by three-time USA Olympian Jim Spivey, one of the nation's top International middle-distance stars of the 80's and 90's.

Spivey talked about his Olympic and World Championship experiences and about running while meeting the team on campus outside the Leonard Center. He spoke to coach Matt Haugen and the Mac Pack about his running career, the importance of giving your best effort, and of the value of trusting your coaches.

Afterwards, the Macalester cross country men ran their most impressive mile intervals session of the season, according to Haugen. The Scots are training for Saturday's St. Olaf Invitational.

A Bronze medalist at the World Championships in the 1500 meters, Spivey has run a 3:49 mile and made the 1500 finals at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. In 1984 he ran his first of three Olympics, facing legendary runners like Sebastian Coe, Steve Cram, Steve Ovett and Steve Scott.
