The Macalester men's and women's golf teams, under the direction of head coach Martha Nause, is back on campus for pre-season practices in preparation for the upcoming fall campaign.
The Scots got the season off to an exciting start after working with legendary PGA Hall of Fame teacher Manuel de la Torre, who spent the day with the team Monday (Aug. 24), working individually with each player on the Mac rosters at both Highland National Golf Course and Mendakota Country Cub.
Manuel found success playing golf, but he found his calling as a teaching professional. He is the leading proponent of the Ernest Jones' Swing Principles. Manuel was head professional at Milwaukee Country Club from 1951 to 1996. He was PGA Teacher of the year in 1986 and is a four-time Wisconsin professional of the year. He is still active in teaching golf to amateurs, professionals, and
teaching pros today.
His students have reached the apex of success in professional golf, including entrance to the LPGA Hall of Fame (Carol Mann) and winning back-to-back British Open Women's Championships (Sherri Steinhauer).
Macalester's teams begin their seasons Sept. 1 with duals against St. Mary's at Mississippi National in Red Wing.
