MIAC post-season honors

After guiding the Scots to a second-place conference finish, Ian Barker has been named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) men's soccer Coach of the Year, as selected by his peers, and three Scots have received first-team All-MIAC honors.

Nate Juergens (Jr., St. Paul, Minn. / Como Park), midfielder Stephen Murphy-Logue (Jr., Anchorage, Ak. / West) and forward Carson Gorecki (Sr., Mahtomedi, Minn.).

Barker got his team to rebound from a 6-7-1 mark two-thirds the way through the season to get into the MIAC playoffs with fourth straight victories in must-win situations, and then the Scots added two more triumphs in the league playoffs to make it into the NCAA Division III playoffs. Macalester moved up from seventh in last year's final MIAC standings to second this year.  Barker joined the Macalester men's soccer staff in 1999 as an assistant to Coach John Leaney and in 2003 became co-head coach along with Leaney. He took complete control over the program in 2006.

Juergens, a team tri-captain, is a two-time All-MIAC pick after bringing all-conference honors as a sophomore. He leads a sturdy Macalester defense which has registered seven shutouts and allowed just 1.1 goals per game in conference play.

Murphy-Logue, a physical midfielder who gets off as many headers on goal as anyone in the league, scored five goals in 2009, mostly on headers, and finished with five goals and two assists.

Gorecki scored five goals and assisted on three others, and netted four second half game-winning, tie-breaking during a five-game stretch early in the season. Gorecki also made the All-MIAC squad in 2006 and 2007 before missing all of '08 with injury, and finishes his career No. 8 on the school's all-time list with 25 goals.

Also, midfielder Jesse Geary (So., Duluth, Minn. / Marshall) has picked up second-team All-MIAC honors. Geary lead the Scots with four assists.

Mac's representative on the MIAC All-Sportsmanship team is goalkeeper Mark Mullaney (Jr., Plymouth, Minn. / Robbinsdale Armstrong).
