After placing 10th at last year's meet,
Wade Ekstrom (Sr., La Crescent, Minn.) moved up to fifth to lead the way for Macalester Saturday at the MIAC championships at Como Park Golf Course in St. Paul. Ekstrom finished the 8000-meter course in 26:01.4. The Scots placed ninth in the team standings.
This is the second year in a row the Scots have produced a top-five MIAC finisher. Last year,
Martin Mudry was the conference runner-up.
Macalester's No. 2 runner, as he has been all season, was
Carl Biggers (So., Verona, Wis.), who crossed the finish line in 27:14.3 to place 29th. Also breaking the 28-minute barrier was
Dale Dybvig (Jr., Osceola, Wis.), who made a big move up the Mac Pack lineup with his 55th place effort (27:57.5).
The team's fourth and fifth runners were
Nick Mangigian (Sr., Ann Arbor, Mich. / Greenhill) and
Adrian St. Francis (Fy., Sonoma, Calif. / Marin Academy). Mangigian placed 79th (28:22.2) and St. Francis was 85th (28:33.0).
Hamline edged St. Olaf for the team title, while top individual honors went to Bethel's Dan Greeno (25:21.1), who won by an easy 34 seconds.
The Scots are off for two weeks and will send a seven-runner team to the NCAA Division Central Region championships Nov. 14 in Grinnell, Ia. Ekstrom will be trying to qualify for the national meet a week later.
