Macalester vs. Minnesota-Morris statistics

Macalester and Minnesota-Morris met in a hard-hitting, defensive-minded game at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, and it was the UMM Cougars pulling it out with a 37-yard field goal with 1:04 left in the fourth quarter for a 3-0 victory.

Each team had chances on offense and moved the ball better than the final score would indicate, but struggled in the red zone, and on third- and fourth-down conversions. The Scots gained 295 yards and 18 first downs, while Minnesota-Morris had 262 yards and 16 first downs.

The only scoring drive began when the Cougars intercepted a pass in their own territory with five minutes left in regulation. UMM drove 52 yards on nine plays to set up the winning Matt Privratask 37-yard field goal just just over a minute to play. Macalester responded with a quick eight-play drive to get into field goal range, but a missed 34-yard field goal try on the final play kept the Scots from forcing overtime.

The Scots, going for their second straight Metrodome shutout over Minnesota-Morris, were once again sharp on defense. As usual, Josh Boomgaarden (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) was the team’s top tackler with 11 stops. Adding eight tackles apiece were Zach Englert (Fy., Salt Lake City, Utah / Skyline), Tyler Hill (Fy., Beaver Dam, Wis. / Wayland Academy) and Dan Hill (Jr., Rochester, Minn. / Brighton). Nate Sands (So., Madison, Wis. / East) picked up an interception.

Quarterback Trevor Miehe (Jr., Holmen, Wis.) went 18-for-32 for 263 yards, throwing seven passes for 119 yards to Jon Elliott (Jr., El Paso, Tex. / Andress). Matt Mitchell (Jr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) pulled in six receptions for 74 yards and Mike Snavely (So., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) grabbed four passes for 62 yards.

The Scots close out their ’09 campaign next Saturday (Nov. 7) when they host Hamline at 1 p.m. Mac heads into the finale with a 2-7 record.  This will be the 110th meeting between these two Snelling Ave. rivals.
