Scots boast nation's top grades; Six earn academic honors

ACWPC All-American Academic honor roll

Six Macalester Scots have achieved national academic honors by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC), and as a team, the Scots achieved the nation's best collective grade point average (gpa).

During the 2007-08 academic year, Macalester water polo team members combined to post a GPA of 3.54, edging Harvard (3.40) for tops among all varsity programs.  Wheaton (Ill.) (3.38), Mercyhurst (Pa.) (3.38) and Stanford (3.34) round out the top six.

In the “Outstanding” level (3.71 to 4.00 gpa), the Scots are represented by Kate Vermann (Fy., Bronx, N.Y. / Fieldston School).

Earning national honors in the “Superior” category are Alex Cortes (Jr., Berkeley, Calif. / Head-Royce), Kristin Mathson (Sr., Verona, Wis.), Lizzie McNamara (Sr., Dallas, Tex. / Hillcrest) and Melinda Vogel (Fy., Santa Barbara, Calif. / San Marcos).  In the “Excellent” category on the academic honor roll is Sarah Ellerton (So., Suffield, Conn. / Suffield)

“The student-athletes on this list, representing many different institutions across the country, inspire the greater water polo community through their hard work and determination, said ACWPC executive director Bryan Kimbell. “The choices that these students have made for a balanced athletic and academic career illustrate the definitive evidence that water polo players will remain near the top of the list for academic excellence in the NCAA for years to come.”
