Macalester's
Jordan Matheson (Jr., Vancouver, B.C. / Nichols School – N.Y.) and
Karla Leon (Fy., Quito, Ecuador / Colegio Menor SFQ) have been selected to play in the upcoming NCAA Division III women's golf championships. The NCAA women's golf committee announced 20 teams and 11 individuals yesterday that will participate at the May 13-16 championships in Waverly, Iowa. The four-day event will be held at Centennial Oaks Golf Course and will be hosted by Wartburg College.
Leon is making her second straight trip to nationals and was a 2007 All-America player in her first collegiate season. She placed 13th overall out of 111 golfers a year ago at Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida. Leon made a big move up on a leader board by firing a 76 on the third round.
This is Matheson's first trip to the NCAA championships after just missing out on a bid last season. A two-time All-MIAC golfer, Matheson was the Minnesota state tourney champ as a junior and third-place finisher this year. She also played to a high finishes last fall at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational and UW-Eau Claire Invitational. Matheson is Macalester's Junior Female Athlete of the Year.
Eleven conferences have been granted automatic qualification and the remaining nine teams were selected on an at-large basis from conferences and the remaining independent institutions. Eleven individuals, not from selected teams, also were selected for the championships. The championships will consist of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently.
The MIAC will be well-represented at the tourney. Gustavus Adolphus and St. Thomas will challenge favored Methodist (N.C.) for top team honors, while MIAC individuals invited are Matheson, Leon and Carleton's Katrina Wood.
