Evan Mitchell (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. / South) and Andrew Yokom (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn. / Mounds View) won events to lead the Scots at the season’s first outdoor meet, the Hamline Invitational. The competition at nearby Hamline University featured teams from Mac, Hamline, St. John’s, Augsburg, Carleton, Bemidji State, Concordia-St. Paul and UW-Superior. Several top unattached athletes also competed.

Waiting throughout the indoor campaign to return to his top event – the javelin throw – the two-time MIAC champion Mitchell easily took top honors (189-04 / 57.70m), while also finishing fourth out of 28 in the hammer throw (150-00 / 45.73m). His first-place javelin distance is a national provisional qualifying mark.  Racing in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles for the first time since making the finals at last spring’s NCAA Division III championships, Yokom showed he has lost little, winning with a 55.31 clocking.

Several other Scots got their outdoor seasons off to good starts, including sprinter Kevin Williams (Jr., Jamaica), who took fourth of 31 entrants in the 100-meter dash (11.54) and seventh of 28 in the 200 dash (23.26). The team’s top finish behind Mitchell and Yokom, was a third-place result in the big 40-runner 1500-meter field by Wade Eckstrom (So., La Crescent, Minn.) (4:04.39).

Mac placed second to St. John’s in the 4x400 relay (3:26.76) and Tyson Morgan (Jr., Lewiston, Me.) just broke the two-minute barrier in the 800-meter run, placing sixth (1:59.97). Second place relay team members were Martin Stenman Andersson (So., Uppsala, Sweden / IT Gymnasiet Uppsala), Yokom, Josh Springer (Sr., Portland, Ore. / Cleveland) and Morgan.

The Scots compete next Saturday (April 12) at the Lee Krough Invitational at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.
