Eric Robinson (So., San Francisco, Calif. / Urban School) halted a nine-game Gustavus winning streak when he pitched Macalester to a 5-3 triumph in the nightcap of an MIAC doubleheader at Midway Stadium. The red-hot Gusties, who had won 13 of their previous 14 games, were held to six hits and a walk, and fall out of first place in the league standings with their first defeat. Gustavus claimed game one 10-5 by pounding out 15 hits.

The split puts Macalester at 11-16 on the season and 4-6 in the MIAC. Gustavus Adolphus drops to second in the standings behind St. Thomas and is now 17-9 overall, 9-1 in the MIAC.

Robinson worked the 6 1/3 innings, giving up just six hits and a walk to one of the conference’s most potent lineups. John Simkins (Sr., Galesburg, Ill.) picked up the save by pitching the final 2/3 of an inning.

Macalester jumped out quickly with three first inning runs and after the Gusties cut the margin to 3-2 with a pair in the top of the third, added another two runs in the bottom of the third to extend the advantage to 5-2. Joe Borer (Sr. St. Paul, Minn. / Central) got the scoring started with a two-run homer in the first. Michael Kennedy (So., Chicago, Ill. / Northside Prep) extended the big two-out rally when he singled in Adam Kent (Sr., Madison, Wis. / West), who followed Borer’s shot with a double. Kennedy and Kent ignited another rally in the third and were driven in on a Will Chen (Fy., Edina, Minn.) bases-loaded hit down the left field line.

In game one, the Gusties led an 8-5 slugfest after four innings. Mac leadoff batter Devin English (So., Annapolis, Md. / DeMatha), who went 5-for-5 in the team’s previous game against Concordia, hit two homers and a single in his first three at-bats and had now reached base nine times in a row. At this point, English’s two-game stats were 8-for-8 batting with a walk, two home runs, three doubles, seven runs scored and six RBI, Despite another huge game for English, the Scots could not overcome 15 Gustavus hits.

The Scots return to action Tuesday (April 22) with an MIAC doubleheader against Carleton at Midway Stadium at 2:30 p.m.
