Spring season begins with 9-0 sweep over Northwestern

Macalester began its quest for a third straight winning season with a 9-0 sweep over Northwestern-Roseville Saturday night at the Leonard Center Field House. The Scots don’t return to competitive action until they open MIAC play Feb. 27 at Carleton.

Tennis season begins Saturday

Macalester’s men’s and women’s tennis teams, both under the direction of head coach Jason Muhl, get the 2010 season going Saturday (Feb. 6) at the Leonard Center Field House. The men’s team looks to continue to move up after going 10-11 last year and opens with a pair of matches Saturday, taking on Cornell (Ia.) at 11 a.m. and Northwestern-Roseville at 5 p.m. Macalester’s women’s team, coming off an 11-7 campaign last spring, then begin their campaign against Northwestern at 8 p.m.

Macalester plays at Wilson / ITA Midwest Regionals

Macalester’s top players competed last weekend (Sept. 25-26) at the Wilson / ITA Midwest Regionals hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College. This competition featured the top teams and players in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. The doubles team of Amanda Wenzel and Stephanie Lee advanced to the round of 16.

Angie Horner receives Academic All-District honors

Macalester senior women’s tennis player Angie Horner has received ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Five honors. Horner receives second-team at-large honors. Horner is the most accomplished player in the history of the Macalester women’s tennis program. She graduated last week with a double-major in English and Russian Studies, and a 3.89 cumulative grade point average. Horner’s won-loss record at the top of the singles lineup over the past two spring seasons was 35-3 – all at No. 1.
