A really important part of the Macalester experience for Macalester soccer players is the study abroad program, typically enjoyed in the spring of junior year.  In 2010 five Macalester men’s soccer players are abroad; Erik Johnson (Spain), Graham Bevan (India), Tristan Taru (China), Nate Juergens (South Africa) and Will Goldstein (Scotland).  Each one of these playershas been asked to reflect on their experiences and here is the very early take from Erik Johnson:

Twenty-five Macalester fall sport student-athletes have earned Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Academic All-Conference honors, as announced by the conference office today.  The MIAC recognized 302 student-athletes who represented the conference’s thirteen institutions. Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior, or senior with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale to qualify for MIAC Academic All-Conference recognition.

Macalester’s Carson Gorecki and Nate Juergens have been selected to the adidas / National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III All-North Region team. Gorecki, a forward, picked up first-team all-region honors and will go forward for All-America consideration. Juergens, a defender, earned second team honors.

Macalester’s men’s and women’s soccer teams have earned the 2009 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award. The 3.63 collective grade point average (GPA) registered by the Mac women’s team is first among all Division III teams and the 3.43 produced by the men’s team during the 2008-09 academic year is ranked No. 4 among NCAA Division III institutions.
