No. 7-ranked Loras picked up a couple second half goals to hold off upset-minded Macalester 2-0 in an NCAA Division III second-round match Sunday night in Dubuque, Iowa.  The Duhawks, who are going for their third straight Final Four appearance, advance to the Round of 16 and improve to 20-2-1. After winning their previous seven games and after a first-round win a night earlier over Grinnell, the Scots wind up at 13-8-1 under MIAC Coach of the Year Ian Barker.

Nate Juergens ’11 and Scott Petesch ’10 play on the powerhouse men’s soccer team, which this year has taken Mac to the NCAA championship playoffs. Both men are also biology majors—and friends—who have done cutting-edge research in molecular genetics.  Their research involves identifying species by sequencing the DNA, long bits of four-letter genetic code. Using DNA sequences rather than morphology (form and structure) to describe species is called DNA barcoding. Read the story here

Macalester extended its winning streak to seven by defeating Grinnell (Ia.) 2-0 in an NCAA Division III first-round playoff match Saturday night at Loras College in Dubuque, Ia. The Scots improve to 13-7-1 and will play national power Loras tomorrow at 6 p.m. in a second round match. No. 7-ranked Loras (19-2-1) is going for its third straight Final Four appearance and the Scots are looking to play the spoiler.  Carson Gorecki scored goals in each half to lead the way for the Scots.

After guiding the Scots to a second-place conference finish, Ian Barker has been named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) men’s soccer Coach of the Year, as selected by his peers, and three Scots have received first-team All-MIAC honors.  Named to the All-MIAC team are defender Nate Juergens, midfielder Stephen Murphy-Logue and forward Carson Gorecki.
