Late rally falls short against Whitman

Host Whitman edged Macalester 62-59 at the Kim Evanger Raney Memorial Classic in Walla Walla, Washington, in the season-opener for both teams. Trina PaStarr scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Scots, while Majra Mucic added eight points. Macalester returns to action Saturday against Whitworth (Wash.).

Season tips off in Walla Walla

Macalester tips off its fifth season under head coach Ellen Thompson this Friday and Saturday (Nov. 20-21) with a pair of games in Walla Walla, Washington, as Whitman College hosts the Kim Evanger Raney Classic. The Scots open the campaign Friday at 6 p.m. (Pacific time) against host-Whitman and on Saturday at 2 p.m. take on Whitworth (Wash.). Click here for live stats of Mac's games. The Scots play their home opener next Tuesday (Nov. 24) against Wisconsin-River Falls.

Veteran Macalester squad has high hopes for upcoming season

Macalester has improved its overall record four straight seasons under head coach Ellen Thompson and has made remarkable progress after basically rebuilding the program from scratch when she was hired five years ago. During the winter of 2009-10, the Scots will be one of the most veteran teams in the MIAC. The Scots went 11-14 last winter and 9-13 in the conference, and with the top seven point producers returning, are optimistic about earning an upper division finish and MIAC post-season berth.

PaStarr selected to all-conference squad

Junior forward Trina PaStarr has been selected to the All-MIAC team for the second year in a row and junior center Ann Baltzer has received honorable mention All-MIAC honors again. PaStarr, who also made the team as a sophomore, was one of the MIAC’s top defenders and finished the conference campaign ranked eighth in scoring (13.0 ppg.), fifth in rebounding (7.1 rpg.) and fifth in blocked shots (1.4 bpg.).
