Scots beat Carleton for MIAC playoff crown; make NCAA tourney

Macalester's Scott Petesch scored the game's only goal as the Scots knocked off Carleton 1-0 in Northfield to win the MIAC men's soccer playoffs and earn a berth in the upcoming NCAA Division III championships. The bracket for the national playoffs will be announced Monday. The red-hot Scots have now won six in a row, all in must-win situations - to reach the NCAA's.

Macalester defeated in MIAC championship match by Carleton

Fourth-seeded Carleton beat No. 3-seed Macalester 3-0 Saturday night in St. Paul to win the MIAC playoff championship and advance to the NCAA Division III playoffs, which get underway next week. The Scots, who had won six of their previous seven games and four straight by shutout, will wait to see if their 13-5-2 record is good enough to get into nationals.

Season wraps up with defeat to Hamline

Macalester wrapped up its season with a 38-6 setback to visiting Hamline in the 110th meeting between these two Snelling Ave. rivals. The Scots wind up at 2-8 on the campaign, while the Pipers are 4-5 with one game remaining. Tight end Matt Mitchell led the Macalester offense with five receptions for 81 yards, while Josh Boomgaarden led the way on defense with 13 tackles.

Boomgaarden receives Academic All-District honors

For the second year in a row, Macalester linebacker Josh Boomgaarden has been selected to the ESPN The Magazine / CoSida Academic All-District 5 football team. Boomgaarden is a first team selection and as such, will go forward for consideration for Academic All-America honors. Boomgaarden is an Economics major with a 3.90 cumulative GPA.
