Macalester’s second indoor meet of the winter season was a good one for the Scots, who turned in some strong performances at the Bethel Open in Arden Hills. After some fast sprints in the season-opener last week at UW-Stout, Emily Matthews continues her good start to the campaign. Matthews placed third out of 25 entrants in the 200-meter dash (26.91) and also took fourth in the 400 dash (60.65).  Maddie Mette and Erin Lowrey earned third-place finishes.

Macalester produced one of its top performances of the season in a game which was up for graps at the end, but Augsburg held on for a 71-68 thriller over the Scots in Minneapolis. The final six minutes were close as the Augsburg lead was at four points or less the rest of the way, including just one point with :54 to play before the hosts put it away with a pair of free throws.  Pierce Peters finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and a couple steals to lead the Macalester effort.

Macalester posted its second-highest scoring total ever and highest MIAC output ever, getting a career-high 29 points from Ann Baltzer and defeating Augsburg 94-66 in Minneapolis.   The all-time record for most points in a game for Macalester is 97 set in the 1994-95 season-opener against Grinnell (Ia.). Today’s outburst ties the second-highest total of 94 established in 1984-85 against St. Paul Bible (now Crown College). Mac’s previous best total in an MIAC game was 92 – accomplished twice in the 90’s.
